TONEDEAF! Full Band Polaroid
The first time I had drawn them all together in an actual scene!! This picture remains the album art for my personal Google Photos album that I use for all TONEDEAF! art. It's desperately in need of a redraw, but I'm still fond of the composition.
Originally drawn between September 4th and 8th, 2022.
IMAGE DESCRIPTION:
A drawing of all four of the main characters of TONEDEAF! in a polaroid. Rhapsody is in front, making peace signs with both her hands and sticking her tongue out towards the camera. Caprice is on the right (to the left of Rhapsody) shyly looking towards the camera and clutching her far arm. Humdrum is on the left, looking over towards the camera with an irritated gaze while holding her hand up to her face as if she's checking her nails. Mazurka is in the back center, behind Rhapsody, resting her left hand on Caprice's shoulder and giving Rhapsody bunny ears with her right hand.
Rhapsody Hoodie
The third time I ever drew Rhapsody. Was still playing around with her colors and design. For some reason, I pictured her being in a sorority early-on (hence the hoodie), something that she would NEVER do nowadays lol. I chose "Upsilon Kappa Kappa" purely for the "Y2K" pun, something no one ever noticed hahaha. Also interesting to note that she still doesn't have a tail! That would still come later.
Undated, but drawn sometime after August 24th, 2022.
IMAGE DESCRIPTION:
Rhapsody sitting in a dark purple hoodie with orange accents and an embroidered "Upsilon Kappa Kappa" logo (which visually appears as "YKK"). She's winking and making a cute hand sign towards the viewer while crossing her legs.
Original Character Designs - Front View
The second time I had ever drawn any of these characters. The original designs were strongly inspired by Rodney Greenblat's work from games like Um Jammer Lammy and PaRappa the Rapper. I was still very much figuring out how to draw furry characters so focusing on simple shapes like in Greenblat's artwork made designing much easier for my brain. I am a bit nostalgic for these renditions of the characters, but it's also hard to look at them nowadays. Especially not a fan of how I drew poor Mazurka LOL.

Original Character Design - Caprice
A few days after I drew Mazurka, Rhapsody, and Humdrum, I finally sat down to draw one more band member. To round out the personality group, I wanted to make the bass player shy. I honestly can't recall if that informed her being a deer or if I already wanted her to be a deer. Regardless, Caprice's original design has many differences to how I draw her now: her long hair was shorter, her head shape was completely different, her ears are shaped different, and dark brown fur covers the entirety of her fingers/thumb (as opposed to only extending midway past the first knuckle in her current design). But, just like the rest of the characters, plenty of details have stayed; her outfit, bass, and necklace all return, and the brown on her ear tips and fingers, even if they changed, is still there as well.

A photo of a traditional drawing made with ink and copic marker of Caprice, looking shy and clutching her left arm with her right hand. She is wearing a light blue dress shirt with a dark green vest over it, long dark blue jeans, and blue & green sneakers. She also has a teal bass guitar strapped over her back.
Original Character Design - Humdrum
Right after making Mazurka and Rhapsody, I immediately set the 30 minute timer again and made Humdrum. As with all of them, lots has changed between the original drawing and her current design, namely in her head, eye, and body shape. I think Humdrum was the only character whose name came before the concept; the idea of a drummer named Humdrum who was always bored was too good to pass up lol, especially as someone who loves unorthodox character names. The spike that comes out of her wrist for her wings was originally two distinct segments, something that I don't think I ever did again.

Original Character Design - Rhapsody
Despite her quickly becoming the main character, Rhapsody was actually the second character I designed (Mazurka was first). Rhapsody's original design and personality was very directly inspired by Stella from Lemonade Mouth lol (that's where she got her dyed hair stripe from). Rhapsody originally had more cat-like eyes, a design detail that I sometimes wish I had kept, but otherwise hasn't changed much over the years. Her orange tank top, fishbone necklace, and starred shoes are all outfit details I still like to give her.

Original Character Design - Mazurka
The very first drawing I ever did for TONEDEAF! At this time, I had no concept for a story or anything. I had just gotten back into drawing and was trying out Copic markers for the first time, and I wanted to draw furry characters for the first time ever due to both 1) always wanting to 2) really wanting to experiment with more interesting color palettes for characters. When I sat down to draw this piece, all I had in my head was "guitar-playing dog who looks pissed off." It's crazy to me to think about how much came from this one drawing. I set a thirty-minute timer (the case for all of the original TONEDEAF! character designs) and just went at it. Rodney Greenblat's art was a major inspiration, hence the cartoonish anatomy and basic shapes.
